Senator Antonio Trillanes IV on Monday (Jan. 16) urged Filipinos to start preparing for the impending return of martial law in the country after President Rodrigo Duterte expressed his resolve to declare it should the need arise.
In a text message, Trillanes, a retired Navy officer, also warned the ranks of those in the military to be cautious in following orders from their superiors if Duterte declares martial law.
“All freedom-loving Filipinos should start preparing to fight another dictator. Soldiers should also start reviewing their constitutional mandate,” he said.
Over the weekend, Duterte said no one– not even the Supreme Court– could stop him from declaring Martial Law if he has to.
Trillanes’ latest remarks were not the first time he criticized the President for toying with the idea of martial law as a contingency or option for failing to curb the drug problem in the country.
In November last year, Trillanes demanded explanation from Duterte on why authoritarian rule would be needed when he already promised to address the narcotics menace within the first six months of his administration.
“Akala ko ba three to six months lang kaya nya nang tapusin ang drug problem or else, magre-resign sya? Tapos ngayon kailangan na mag martial law? Anyare? Nag-supermoon?” he said.
