President Rodrigo Duterte accused priests of being hypocrites on Wednesday (Jan. 18) for criticizing the killings which have occurred in the war against drugs while keeping quiet about their alleged wives.
In a speech at the 20th anniversary of a hospital in Nueva Ecija, Duterte said he cannot understand priests’ condemnation of drug-related deaths as extrajudicial killings.
He joked that priests should try shabu for themselves to know the extent of the illegal drugs menace.
“Eh itong mga — kaya dapat ‘yung ibang pari, mag-shabu para maintindihan nila. I recommend one or two of the bishops,” he said.
Duterte then mentioned the wives which some priests supposedly keep.
“Eh sa kanila walang shabu pero asawa meron. Pareho man kami. Ako pati ang mga pari namin sa Davao? Ah pareho. Tag-dalawa, tatlong asawa. Asus. Huwag na tayo mag — all the hypocrisy of, pretension,” he said.
To stress the hypocrisy within the Catholic Church’s ranks, Duterte said accounts of priests’ “sleazy” behavior can be read in the book “Altar of Secrets” written by the late journalist Aries Rufo.
There are also films about homosexual priests, he added.
Duterte said priests can only have the moral ascendancy to criticize others if they are also open about their shortcomings.
“When you expose the frailties of your faithful, you are free to shout on the pulpit but kung kayo exempted, anong klase ‘yan. Lahat tayo,” he said.
